Game development is sort of like filmmaking with a much harsher learning curve. While anyone can grab a cheap camera and attempt to bring a story to life, it takes so much more effort to design a game. That’s not to say that filmmaking is easy, but it is definitely more user-friendly.

Occasionally, professional game developers try to remove the barriers to game design by developing a game with homemade creations in mind. This could be something as simple as a level editor, or something as complex as the RPG Maker series, which allows consumers to design their own role-playing games.
If those concepts sound intriguing, then Nintendo might have developed the perfect game for you: WarioWare: D.I.Y. This do-it-yourself adventure is packed with pre-made mini-games to play through, but players will quickly discover that those games are merely icing on the cake. The cake, as it turns out, is something you have to mix, bake, and frost yourself. And when you do, the results are quite amazing.

No Programming Required
During the training stages in WarioWare: D.I.Y., players will frequently encounter a common term used by game developers: AI (artificial intelligence). Unlike the AI they work with, which must be written from scratch using A+ mathematical skills, this game doesn’t require you to know much about the details of real-world programming.
Instead, WarioWare: D.I.Y. uses a deep (but easy to comprehend) system that involves a series of pre-programmed selections. With those selections, players can develop a five-second mini-game that features their own personal drawings, a few frames of animation, sound effects assigned to specific elements, an original score (which can be pieced together using instruments, quirky audio effects, or sounds from classic NES games), and basic touch screen interactivity.
If the five-second timeframe sounds crazy, then look no further than WarioWare’s other offerings: this is not a series that’s built on length. It’s a short-and-sweet, ultra-quirky franchise with challenges that will earn smiles from series veterans and baffle the minds of newcomers.
“Wait, so you’re telling me I have to tap the hand on screen to make it pick this guy’s giant nose?”
Yes, that’s exactly what WarioWare is telling you. But in WarioWare: D.I.Y., you don’t have to settle for silly and potentially snotty mini-games because you can make your own.

The Creation Process
After running through the first batch of pre-made mini-games offered in WarioWare: D.I.Y., I was a bit concerned about the process of making my own mini-games. It’s not that I didn’t want to, but having played with other creation tools, I was afraid it’d be an arduous process that was only fun when the game was complete.
That’s what makes WarioWare: D.I.Y. so different from the rest. The game provides a simplified Photoshop-style tool that lets you draw whatever you want. There are dozens of colors and background tiles (including one that paints a flame and another that paints Mario-inspired bricks). Three pen sizes are available, allowing players to draw (almost) as precisely as possible. To add even more detail, the image that you’re working on can be enlarged up to 16 times.
In addition to having a very well designed paint and drawing tool, the game contains a music creator that is really fun to use. Five audio tracks (four standard tracks plus one set aside for rhythm) are available. The drum set alone is pretty extensive: you can choose to use a standard percussion set, or use electric drums, toy drums (which is essentially an amusing set of sound effects), beat-box drums, Asian drums that provide an exotic jingle, or choose from 14 sounds made from pots and pans. My favorite is the 8-bit drums, which includes the fireball and death sound effects from the old Mario games.
The other instrument types are just as varied: piano, organ, harpsichord, melodica, flute, wood flute, trumpet, saxophone, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, banjo, violin, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, and more sound effects-based instruments than could ever be listed here.

Not For Every Wario Fan
The only downside to WarioWare: D.I.Y. is that it’s not technically a true WarioWare sequel. Since players are expected to have fun creating their own games, the pre-made content amounts to half (or less) of what it should be. WarioWare games are never long, and they rarely have the kind of replay value of, say, a Mario game. But if you were hoping this would be a true successor to WarioWare: Smooth Moves for Wii, you might be disappointed.
If, however, you’ve always wanted to make your own WarioWare mini-games – or have had the desire to create any game at all – WarioWare: D.I.Y. is an impressive package that won’t let you down.

Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge

Reviewer: Steven Hopper

Back in the bygone era of PC gaming, the adventure genre was at once a unique and flourishing one, allowing for experiences that you simply couldn’t find on consoles at the time. Publishers like Sierra and LucasArts were releasing classic games left and right, many of which would be considered the best titles the genre has to offer even today. Certainly at the top of the heap was LucasArts’ Monkey Island franchise. Combining classic point-and-click mechanics, great puzzles, and extremely funny dialogue, the Monkey Island series was a hit with gamers and definitely fantastic for adventure fans at the time.

Last year marked a great moment for fans of the Monkey Island franchise and its swashbuckling hero, Guybrush Threepwood, as LucasArts released an updated HD version of the classic first entry to the series. Now, LucasArts has revisited the original franchise yet again with the release of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition. Monkey Island 2: Special Edition applies the same model to the original game’s sequel, updating it for modern consoles and PCs with streamlined controls and high-def visuals while still keeping the original foundation of the game in place, including great puzzles and snappy humor. If you loved last year’s trip back to Monkey Island, then you should definitely check this follow-up remake out.
Monkey Island 2 finds our hero in a precarious position, dangling from a rope with one hand while holding onto a full treasure chest with the other. Your potential love interest Elaine Marley seems to drop down on a rope to assist Guybrush, demanding an explanation. It seems that following LeChuck’s defeat at the end of the first game, Guybrush has become somewhat of a blowhard, regaling his exploits and courageous journey to anyone within earshot. Sporting a sprouty pubescent beard and wearing fancy pirate regalia, Guybrush is searching for a mythical treasure, known as Big Whoop, when it appears that the once ghost pirate (now zombie pirate) LeChuck is back and champing at the bit for revenge against his one-time dispatcher.

The original game’s sharp wit and sense of humor return in fine form in this updated sequel. The characters are rife with snappy one-liners, and the game’s puzzles are pretty funny, often requiring you to think a bit unconventionally in order to complete them. This can mean enticing a rat into a trap with the clever use of cheese doodles, or positioning a practical joke above a bully’s door in order to proceed.
Instead of simply updating the game exactly the way last year’s The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition did, the crew at LucasArts did one further and updated the interface. The game is even more polished to work on the Xbox 360 controller, moving the control of the cursor to the right thumbstick, while controlling Guybrush’s walking with the left thumbstick. By pressing on the right trigger when highlighting an object of interest in the environment, you’re able to open up a menu of contextual actions, while the left trigger will open your inventory. The new control scheme is comfortable, and does a great job of modernizing the overall experience.
The new controls are definitely an improvement over the first Monkey Island remake, but they’re still not perfect. While it’s generally agreeable, using the analog stick to walk can cause you to get stuck on objects in the environment, can feel a little cumbersome at times. For some reason, Guybrush gets slow and twitchy when moving at an angle as well.

Graphically, Monkey Island 2: Special Edition has received a comparable update to last year’s Monkey Island: Special Edition, and looks even better. The hand-drawn environments and character models fit well with the overall humorous tone of the game, sporting a clean, cartoonish look. The music and sound have also gotten a once-over, with the soundtrack being updated very nicely and great voice work throughout. Additionally, Monkey Island 2 allows you to listen to the developer’s commentary, listening to the creators’ for a inside look at the game’s creation. Of course, if you’re an old-school purist, the game is playable in with classic graphics, MIDI-based music, and the original SCUMM interface, just like last year’s iteration.
Aside from some finicky movements, Monkey Island 2: Special Edition is another outstanding remake of a true adventure game classic. Whether you’re a gamer that missed out on this game the first time around (shame on you), or someone who simply wants to experience this hilarious adventure in a new light, this is your chance.

By now, you’ve probably seen the somewhat tainted “Ashes to Ashes” trailer for Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 that appeared last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (“tainted” since the big reveal was spoiled last week thanks to a promotions error on Xbox Live). Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski was on hand to pull back the curtain on the, as Bleszinski called it, “worst kept secret in the video game industry.”

The trailer wasn’t quite as affecting as the Gears of War “Mad World” trailer (still one of the best ever, by the way), but it definitely had plenty of discussion-worthy elements (giant tentacle Lambent beasts, female Gears, double-barrel shotguns, the fact that it’s coming out April 2011, etc.). So have at it.

When the original Crysis was released on PC back in 2007, it was hands down the best looking game ever released. The problem was that the majority of the PC gamers at the time couldn’t run the game with the detail level at full. Since then, Crytek has been hard at work building the new CryEngine 3 so that it would play on consoles as well. They have released several tech demos running on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 showing off everything the new engine offers.

Now we get the official debut trailer for Crysis 2. In the trailer we see that New York City is in ruins and that the military is taking on an invading alien force. We also get a glimpse of the new Nanosuit 2 but no real gameplay unfortunately. Crytek originally unveiled this trailer in Times Square. It looks awesome and is all rendered in-game supposedly. Given the look from the original game, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. Crytek has also opened up the official site for you to peruse. You can check out the first screenshots and concept art in our Crysis 2 gallery.

Crysis 2 is going to be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC this holiday season. Check out the debut trailer after the jump.Read more…

After much anticipation, a few leaked details and some delays, Gears of War 3 footage is finally upon us. In tonight’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Epic Game’s Cliff Bleszinkski showed off the first ever seen footage of the third installment in the 360 exclusive third person shooter series.

In the trailer called "Ashes to Ashes", a bearded Dom runs from a horde of Locust until he is reunited with Marcus and crew, including female soldiers, which Bleszinski said is definitely a new part of the game. The gun Marcus uses is a double barrell shotgun, another new addition, and the COGS attempt to fight off not only the Locust this time around, but also some sort of tentacle creature fighting with the Locust. It was rumored earlier this week that this creature would be able to hit players behind cover, making for more varied and frantic gameplay.

Aside from all that, Cliffy B. didn’t have much else to say about the game, aside from a likely release date of April 8th, 2011. A year away? Too long.

Respawn Entertainment is the new studio headed by former Infinity Ward leadership Vince Zampella and Jason West, who were fired by Activision in March. Respawn has a website but no logo, no office, and no game. Respawn does have a publishing deal with Electronic Arts when the company does begin developing games over the next few years. The deal is with EA Partners, not EA proper, which means Zampella and West get something Activision couldn’t provide: control over their creative destiny.

EA doesn’t own Respawn’s future gaming franchise, Respawn does.

The duo are still caught in a legal battle with their former publisher, but it hasn’t stopped them from moving forward. Respawn is open for business as of today, actively accepting job applications, and they spoke over the phone with me this morning, joined by EA Partners head David De Martini, to discuss what life is like after Infinity Ward, their future and what it feels like to be fired from Activision.

G4: Why today? You’re just starting. It’s just the two of you and the EA partnership. What made it so important to get the announcement out so quickly, given that you also have the legal stuff happening in the background?

Vince Zampella: I think you nailed it on the head with the [idea that] it’s just Jason and I. We need to get the hiring going. [laughs] We need to get the word out there that the studio exists and we want people to send their resumes in.

G4: Was it important to you that even though you have the legal situation that you’re working out, to publicly say that "we are doing this, we’re doing it now, and we aren’t fading into the background"?

Zampella: For us, it’s about getting back to what we love to do. We’re gamers, it’s in our blood, we want to get back to it. We don’t don’t want to sit around idle. It’s important for that reason.

Jason West: We got fired, and that was very traumatic, and we were sitting there thinking about what to do and a lot of publishers from all over the world showed a lot of interest. Our phones started lighting up and we started getting a lot of e-mails and that was great. The offers started coming in, so it was…then we took some time and looked at what we had and we thought EA Partners was a great fit because they’d respect our culture, give us the freedom to do what we needed to do and own the IP, so now we’re ready to respawn and get the hiring going.

David De Martini: From the EA Partners perspective, I think after a big, traumatic event like that, I think what we’re trying to do is provide some level of sanctuary for the guys to give them the freedom and independence to be able to get started, find a facility, announce the formation of their company and then start hiring the best people in the industry to collaborate with. As has been the case in the past, the greatest games come out of the best collaborations, and these guys have proven to be creative visionaries and great collaborators.

G4: Given your experience with the Call of Duty franchise, with Respawn, it’s clear that having control of the IP is important to you. Would you guys have signed with EA or anyone without that? Was Respawn’s control over the IP contingent upon you guys signing?

West: Yeah, that was required going forward.

"We need to be in a position to control our own destiny and make sure the integrity of the game is preserved"

G4: What makes that so important? Depending on your publisher, you’ll have a different amount of influence on an IP you work on. Only a select few in the industry have pulled off the ability to completely control their IP.

West: We think to make the best games, you need a team that’s passionate about what they do and be able to put all their passion and love into the game, and the fans respond to that — it’s critical to success. We need to be in a position to control our own destiny and, you know, make sure the integrity of the game is preserved.

Martini: From EA’s perspective, I think our attitude is that you don’t want to hold the partner hostage by holding their IP hostage. They will be the creators of the IP, it is their IP. I understand that we’re funding the IP and I think that we get the parent benefits of the publishing and distribution. I think the way that you keep and maintain good relationships is by both doing what you’re supposed to be doing — these guys creating 95-rated games and us doing a great job with doing the PR and marketing on the game so that it sells effectively, so that people really enjoy the entertainment experience. I don’t think contracts keep people together, I think it’s trust in a relationship that keeps people together.

G4: You guys talked about how the firing through Activision was a traumatic event. I know you’re working out the legal end of that, but what went through your mind when you went through that? Given that I was the one that originally broke that, too, it certainly made my week interesting. [laughs around the room] Emotionally, what was it like?

West: Yeah.

Zampella: Hmm.

[pause]

Zampella: It was…surreal.

West: If you were involved in launching the biggest entertainment property of all time and then three weeks before you’re supposed to get your bonus check, you got fired, it feels something like that. [laughs]

Zampella: It’s been a tough time. That obviously affects us, it affects our families, it affects other people. It’s a pretty traumatic experience, it really is.

Martini: And I think I’ve used the word sanctuary before, but I think that’s why it was important after the guys got fired for, obviously, all the publishers around the world to step in and lend a hand of support out there. It is a traumatic experience. These are a couple of guys making great games and all of a sudden you find yourself out of a job. I think it’s important for the community to rally. They’ve been bringing great entertainment to people for years and I’m sure it must have been a really great feeling to see so many people rally.

G4: You guys have left. You’re starting over. Do you have any words to the guys that are still over at Infinity Ward? That was the team that you guys have built over a number of titles.

[long pause]

EA Publicist: Sorry, they can’t really comment on people still employed at Infinity Ward or any of the litigation.

G4: Are you guys modeling yourselves off any other independent studios?

West: That’s an excellent question. There’s a lot of independent studios and I’m sure we’ll be reaching out to them for tips and talking to those guys, definitely.

G4: Do you expect you’ll remain a single-game studio? That was the model at Infinity Ward.

Zampella: Literally, today is our first day. It’s just Jason and I. [laughs] The main focus right now has to be getting the infrastructure of the studio in place, getting one team up and running before we can even consider or think about anything else.

West: It’s all about focusing and making sure our premiere title is huge and something that the fans and the gaming community really are gonna love. That’s what we’re all about right now.

G4: You guys have the Call of Duty name attached to you as you go forward, but the gaming industry doesn’t really highlight the actual individual developers. They may know an Infinity Ward or Bungie or Valve. How are you guys going to remain in the public consciousness? Clearly, it’s going to be a while before until you’re talking about the game itself.

West: We definitely want to engage the fans early and often. It’s gonna be less about me and Vince and more about Respawn Entertainment and the team we’re building and what we want to do going forward. It’s not just about our games, we want to build a new studio and build a new relationship with the gaming community, and we’d love to hear what they want us to do, too.

"It’s all about fans and coming up with something that’s going to make their heads explode"

G4: What happens from here? What’s the next step? What’s the next six months for Respawn?

West: As Vince was saying, we’re gonna find space and infrastructure and build up those things, we’re gonna build up our team, we’re going to start talking new ideas, start talking to the community, both here and abroad to get the international perspective on what everyone would love to see us do, and we’ll go from there.

G4: You guys have been able to sign a major publishing contract and control the direction of your new IP. It’s early days yet, but do you expect that’s going to be the future for a lot of other developers, or at least an aspiration?

West: To the degree that publishers fire the heads of their biggest franchises, I think that’s gonna keep happening.

Zampella: I don’t think it’s completely unusual for other developers. Some of the top developers do still own their own IP.

G4: But it’s certainly not sort of an industry standard, it’s among an elite group.

Martini: We obviously have a lot of deals in place. I don’t think it’s particularly unusual for the top level of independent studios. Once people have established themselves within the industry, I believe the table turns from unproven, you’re taking an awful lot of risk as a publisher to fund a project to these guys who are incredibly proven — the Cryteks of the world, the Vavles of the world, the Epics of the world. I don’t think that’s unusual at all, I think it’s more difficult.

G4: I know you guys don’t have much to talk about in terms of your next project yet, but if you could speak to the fans, what would you say is Respawn’s mission statement? What do you want to say to the guys who have been following you guys for years and are clearly going to be keeping a close eye as Respawn goes forward?

In the video below, we speak to Crysis 2 Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo, who talks about the the driving force behind the sequel, and the game’s plot and the developers decision to move Crysis from the jungle to the urban jungle of New York City.

"You want to pick places that have more intrinsic appeal than just some remote island or desert," Camarillo told us, "Where can you move this game to that’s more compelling and interesting? If you think of the progress of the story and how it’s going to go over a three year period, you have aliens in Crysis, where are they gonna go? Eventually this conflict is going to be taken to centers of population and conflict." Hence, New York City.

Camarillo also talked about whether shooters and RPGs are merging, whether console gamers are going to get a gimped version of the game and a lot more. Check it out in the video below:

Red Dead Redemption’s multiplayer is revealed in the newest trailer released from Rockstar Games.

We have yet to see what Red Dead Redemption’s multiplayer side would offer until Rockstar released the newest trailer. In it we get to see the different modes that will be available in the game. When you start out the multiplayer side, the whole single player map will be made available to you and whatever you choose to do in the Free Roam mode will be up to you. You can wander the country side looking for good deeds to accomplish or opportunities to do evil. You can join up with other players to create a posse of 2-8 people. From there your group is able to roam together and take on other posses, fight criminals, or even take on the law. In addition to the game’s awesome Free Roam mode, there will also be the usual multiplayer staples you would expect like Deathmatch and variations on Capture the Flag. There is an interesting mode where your posse will take on waves of animals much like Gears of War 2’s Horde mode. Red Dead Redemption’s single player experience looks really cool but it looks like Rockstar has added some really cool features to make the multiplayer side shine just as bright.

Red Dead Redemption is going to be released on May 18th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC. Check out the multiplayer trailer after the break.Read more…
